Travel Updates

Dear Travel Trade Partners,

Due to our winter operation and early departure schedule, and in an effort to ensure a seamless boarding experience, we are requesting that please arrive at the airport at least 4 hours prior to your scheduled departure with immediate effect

This extra time is crucial due to expected weather conditions, heavy congestion at immigration and security checks. Kindly note, this update is for our check-in procedures for international flights ex-YYZ (ET553).

Please note the following guidelines, effective immediately:

  • Check-In Counters Closing Time:

Check-in counters will now close 90 minutes before scheduled departure time (STD). After this time, passengers will not be able to check in or drop luggage, so timely arrival is crucial.

  • Security and Boarding Requirements:

Passengers are strongly encouraged to complete check-in and proceed to security as soon as possible to avoid delays and enjoy a smoother journey.

If you need any further assistance, feel free to email/call our support team.

    Ethiopian Airlines Group wishes to inform its customers and partners that the recent mandate issued by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will not affect Ethiopian Airlines’ international flight operations to and from the United States. All Ethiopian Airlines operated flights connecting Africa and the U.S. will continue to operate on schedule.

    The airline notes, however, that passengers connecting from domestic U.S. points or offline cities on other carriers may experience schedule adjustments or additional verification procedures as a result of the FAA directive. Ethiopian Airlines advises all such travelers to allow extra time for their journeys and verify connection details with their respective airlines prior to departure.

    We encourage all affected passengers connecting through one of our gateways (IAD, JFK, EWR, ORD, ATL) to/from another US gateway to check with their respective airlines and allow extra time for connections to ensure a smooth travel experience. Ethiopian Airlines remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and seamless service for all our customers traveling between the United States, Africa, and beyond.

    To ensure the safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft, Ethiopian Airlines implements important safety rules regarding carrying lithium-powered devices.

    While some lithium-powered devices are completely prohibited, some are accepted under a specific safety protocol. These devices are permitted in checked and carry-on baggage with the approval Of Ethiopian Airlines as follows:

    • The use of power banks onboard any Ethiopian Airlines flight is strictly prohibited. Power banks and any electronic devise with lithium-ion batteries must be kept under the seat, not in overhead bins and must not be used in any way while onboard.
    • Lithium battery powered vehicles/motorized vehicles (which are not mobility aids) and commonly referred as air-wheel, solo-wheel, electric skateboards, hover-board, mini-segway balance wheels both as carry-on or checked-in baggage are prohibited, whether with or without lithium battery as the materials pose risk to flight safety. These items will be offloaded if they are discovered inside the cabin.
    • Lithium battery powered-powered lighters without a safety cap or means of protection against unintentional activation fall under forbidden goods for carriage.
    • Defibrillators (AED), portable oxygen concentrators (POC) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), containing lithium metal or lithium-ion cells or batteries may be carried by passengers for medical use as follows: Portable medical electronic devices (PMED), such as automated external.

    a. For lithium metal or lithium alloy batteries, a lithium content exceeding 2 g, but not exceeding 8 g; or

    b. For lithium-ion batteries, a watt-hour rating exceeding 100 Wh, but not exceeding 160 Wh;

    c. Batteries shall be of a type that meets the requirements Of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part Ill, subsection 38.3.

    - Portable electronic devices, such as power tools, video cameras and laptops containing lithium-ion batteries as follows:

    d. Lithium-ion batteries with a watt-hour rating exceeding 100 Wh, but not exceeding 160 Wh;

    e. Batteries shall be of a type that meets the requirements Of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, part 111, subsection 38.3.

    Remember the 7 simple steps:

    1. Pack light: Only bring the devices and batteries you really need.
    2. Stay alert: If a device is hot, smoking, or damaged, tell the crew (or airport staff) immediately.
    3. Keep devices with you: Always carry phones, laptops, cameras, vapes (if allowed) and other battery-powered items in your hand baggage, not in checked baggage.
    4. Protect loose batteries: Keep spare batteries and power banks in their original packaging or cover the terminals with tape to prevent short-circuits.
    5. Gate check reminder: If your hand baggage is taken at the gate to go in the aircraft baggage hold, remove all lithium batteries and devices first.
    6. Check battery size: For larger batteries (over 100 watt-hours, such as those used in larger cameras, drones, or power tools), check with your airline as approval may be required.
    7. Check airline rules: Always confirm your airline’s policies, as requirements may differ in compliance with local regulations.
