1. What is my checked free baggage allowance in Ethiopian airlines?

For piece system

Economy: up to 2 pieces, each with a maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lbs.) and maximum sum of dimension equal to 158 cm (62 in.) Cloud Nine: up to 2 pieces, each with a maximum weight of 32 kg (70 lbs.) and a maximum sum of dimension equal to 158 cm (62 in.) or 3 pieces 23 kg each. For more detail please click here :

Economy: up to 40KG From/To DOH/MCT/KWI/BAH, Up to 46KG From KWI to KRT and for domestic flight 20KG. Cloud Nine/Business class: Always Piece system applies with 3 PC-23KG except for domestic flights where 30KG applies

2. What is excess baggage?
Passenger baggage that exceeds the limits of free baggage allowance allowed by Ethiopian airlines and for which extra fee must therefore be paid.
3. Are all the excess baggage rates available for purchase at the airport?
No, only the flat rate per KG is available at the airport. The sporting equipment and animals are to be booked at nearest Ethiopian airlines ticketing office or website prior to your flight. check the terms and condition applied for your excess baggage charges. 4. How can I travel with my luggage if its dimension excess 300cm(118inc)?
Any baggage with total dimensions exceeding 300cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight
5. Is excess baggage fee refundable?
No, Payment is non-refundable/non-re routable unless the cancelation is involuntary by Ethiopian airlines.

Excess Luggage Rules for Sporting Equipment

    Rules:

  • These excess baggage rates are only applicable on ET operated flights
  • These excess baggage rates shall be applicable per sector(e.g. for the itinerary  LHR-X/ADD-ZNZ, the EXB charge shall be assessed for LHR-ZNZ)
  • The excess baggage charge for sporting eqipment can be collected in local currency of the departure station.
  • Provided that the below three criterias are fullfilled, any sporting equipment shall be transported for free on Ethiopian flights.

     1)The passenger is carrying only 1 checked-in baggage, making the sporting equipment the 2nd PC
     2)The weight of the sporting equipment is less than or equal to 32 kgs even if it is the 2nd PC.
     3)The total dimension of the sporting equipment is less than or equal to 158cms or 62 inches (Length + Width + Height).
  • for domestic route prior arrangment with station is required
  • All other rules and regulations concerning sporting eqiuopmnet shall be governed  by Ethiopian baggage handling  and excess baggage handling policies and procedures.

Surf board with total dimension of less than or equal to 300cm (118 Inches) can be taken as part of the free checked-in baggage only on ET operated flights. This rule is applicable only on wide body aircrafts, and shall not be applicable on B737 aircrafts due to dimension restriction.

Any sporting equipment with total dimensions exceeding 300cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight.

    Service Animals

    Guide dogs for the blind and deaf that passenger depends on are transported free of charge on all Ethiopian flights and may also travel inside the cabin. Please remember to notify Ethiopian of regarding the guide dog ahead of time.

    Additional applicable charge should be collected for interline carriage for both non code share and code share flights.For more information click here

    1. Can I travel with a pet?

    Yes, Ethiopian accepts Dog or Cat into the cabin with limited number per compartment (2 in Economy class and 1 in business class) with a box measuring dimensions not more than 55X40X20cms and does not exceed 8kgs including transport container.

    2. Can my pet travel in the cabin with me?

    Yes, if dog or cat contained in boxes not larger than 55X40X20cms dimension, otherwise shall not be accepted in cabin and therefore shall be loaded in belly.

    3. Are there any health, breed, or age restrictions?

    Governmental restrictions regarding pet carriage and acceptance vary from country to country. Please contact your nearest Ethiopian Airlines office or your travel agent Owner assumes all risk for injury sickness or death of any pet accepted for transportation, and assumes responsibility for compliance with all governmental regulations and restrictions. Ethiopian will not be responsible in the event that any pet is refused carriage into or through, any state, country or territory

    4. How many pets can I travel with?

    One pet up to 32 kg is allowed, and pet that is more than 32 KG shall be transported as cargo per cargo procedure.

    5. How do I transport pets or live stock?

    Pets shall be transported in cabin or baggage compartment if the weight of the pet is up 32 kg , and shall be transport as cargo if the weight exceeds 32 kg.
