       Ethiopian Airlines Online Check-In

Check in online with Ethiopian Airlines to prepare for your journey before arriving at the airport. Use our web check-in service to confirm your flight details, select an available seat, provide the required travel information, and access your boarding pass.

Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes 2 hours before the scheduled departure time. Before starting, check that your flight is eligible and have your booking reference or e-ticket number ready.

 

              How to Check In Online with Ethiopian Airlines

Complete your Ethiopian Airlines web check-in easily by following this process:

  • Open the Check-In Portal: Access the online check-in form between 48 hours and 2 hours before your scheduled flight departure.

  • Enter Your Booking Details: Provide your last name as it appears on your ticket along with your 6-character booking reference (PNR) or 13-digit e-ticket number.

  • Review Flight & Travel Information: Confirm your itinerary details and enter any required passport, visa, or contact information requested for destination compliance. 

  • Select Your Seat & Optional Services: Choose an available seat if the option is offered. Depending on your booking, you may also be shown additional services or an upgrade offer.

  • Complete Check-In & Access Boarding Pass: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete check-in and download or print your boarding pass or save it to your mobile device.

If you cannot complete check-in online, follow the instructions displayed by the system or visit an Ethiopian Airlines airport counter with your travel documents.

              What You Need Before Checking In

Before you begin online check-in, prepare:

  • Your booking reference (PNR) or e-ticket number.

  • Your last name as it appears on your ticket.

  • Your passport and any required visa or other travel documents.

  • Any additional travel information requested during the check-in process.

Make sure your booking and travel details are correct. Some passengers or itineraries may require additional verification at the airport.

              After Completing Online Check-In

Access Your Boarding Pass : Follow the instructions displayed after check-in to download or print your boarding pass. If a boarding pass is not available online or your travel documents require verification, follow the airline's instructions and visit the appropriate airport counter.

If You Have Checked Baggage : Online check-in does not replace baggage drop-off. Proceed to the designated baggage-drop or check-in counter and meet the applicable airport deadline (at least 1 hour before international flights and 45 minutes before domestic flights). For full details on weight limits and allowances, please review our Baggage Allowance Guidelines.

If You Are Travelling Without Checked Baggage : If you have completed check-in, have the required digital or printed boarding pass, and do not need additional document verification, follow the airport's instructions for proceeding directly through security to your departure gate at least 30 minutes prior to departure.

Online check-in for return flights can only be completed 48 hours before flight departure and after you have departed on the first sector of your flight. However, if one of your sectors is with another airline and you were not able to check in successfully on ethiopianairlines.com, you will need to visit the other airline’s website in order for you to check-in.

Yes, you can check in your travelling companions if you make your bookings together, provided they share the same booking reference as yours in our record.

If  you fail to check in on time, you may be refused for carriage on your flight. This is in the interest of maintaining Ethiopian on-time performance and to ensure those on the flight who have connecting flights can make it on time.

  • Depending on your fare conditions, a failure to check in on time may also result in: The loss of the original fare value. You may be required to make a new booking and pay for a new ticket if you wish to travel, or
  • Pay a change fee penalty plus any difference between the fare of your new booking and the original fare

Passenger with no luggage shall arrive at the gate 30 minutes prior to boarding. If the passenger with baggage drop off shall arrive at web check-in counter at least 1 hour before departure for international flights and 45 minutes before departure for the domestic flight.

This means when a given passenger is restricted to make online check-in and in this case he/she has to check-in at the airport. This happens when the passenger travel document requires further in person verification or when a given passenger is restricted to enter to the destination country.

Partial check-in happen when the first flight segment is checked in but the second flight segment is not. Some times if there are more than one passenger, the system will allow to check-in one passenger but not the other passenger. When this happen the traveler should check-in the remining flight segment at the airport.

This includes various system error behind the scene and one or more system may not be working as expected. When the passenger get this response he/she should proceed and make their check-in at the airport.

Error: INHIBITED_SSR_FOUND

Cause: This error occurs when a booking has a special service request such as a Wheelchair, Stretcher, Medical case, Pet in the cabin, or extra seat passenger that is inhibited.

Solution: Any bookings having one of these requests will not be able to check-in and the passenger should go to the airport counter.

Error: Segment Restricted/Segment not eligible for Check-in

Cause: The system is unable to complete your check-in. The segment you are trying to check in is restricted for online check-in.

Solution: Please go to the airport to complete the check-in formalities and receive your boarding pass(es)

Error: Flight Not Initialized

Cause: This happens when the passenger flight is not yet ready for Check-in service

Solution: Please try again within 48 hours of your scheduled flight departure time. If the error continues, please contact us immediately

Error: Online check-in window is closed

Cause: This is when the Online check-in window is closed

Solution: Please proceed immediately to the airport to complete the check-in formalities and receive your boarding pass(es)

Error: CHECK_IN_WINDOW_NOT_YET_OPEN

Cause: This error occurs when the passenger is trying to check-in online before the allowed check-in time.

Solution: Please try again within 48 hours of your scheduled flight departure time.

Error: Invalid Passport Number

Cause: This could be due to incorrect document details.

Solution: Ensure that you have entered the correct document details and try again. If the error continues, please contact our global call center or proceed to the airport to complete the check-in formalities and receive your boarding pass(es)

Error: DOCUMENT_NUMBER_DUPLICATED

Cause: This is when 2 passengers enter the same document type and document ID on the same PNR.

Solution: Please ensure that you have entered the correct document details and try again. If the error continues, please contact our global call center for further assistance or proceed immediately to the airport to complete the check-in formalities and receive your boarding pass(es)

Error: Online Check-in not allowed

Cause: This error in most cases is due to an unpaid ancillary

Solution: Please contact our call center to complete the payment and check in to receive your boarding pass(es)

Error: Inhibited Station

Cause: Check-in is not allowed from the origin or your point of departure.

Solution: Please contact our call center or complete your check-in at the airport.

Error: Online Check-in is not allowed APP Error

Cause: The system is unable to complete your check-in at this time.

Solution: Please retry after some time. If the error continues, please contact our global call center for further assistance or proceed to the airport to complete the check-in formalities and receive your boarding pass(es).

Error: ASSOCIATED_PASSENGER_NOT_ELIGIBLE/ inhibited Passenger Type

Cause: Passengers like Infants, and unaccompanied minors are inhibited from using self-service check-in applications.
Solution: Please contact us immediately for further assistance or proceed immediately to the airport to complete the check-in formalities and receive your boarding pass(es).

 

Passengers traveling to Dubai (DUB), Saudi Arabia (JED/MED), Kuwait (KWI), Bahrain (BAH), Canada (YYZ), and the USA (IAD) must obtain OK to Board approval if departing from Uganda (EBB). This requirement applies to all passengers, regardless of nationality, due to Ebola-related travel restrictions imposed on departures from Uganda.

Thailand Visa Requirement: Passengers must obtain a valid Thai visa before travel through the official Thai e-Visa website. Failure to meet the visa requirement may result in denial of boarding or entry. Apply your E-Visa Here

Plan Ahead for Your Flight from Kigali (KGL)

Due to ongoing roadworks between Prince House, Giporoso, and Masaka are causing major traffic delays leading to Kigali International Airport.

 To ensure you do not miss your flight, please follow these updated guidelines:

  • Arrive Early: Report to the airport at least 4 hours before your scheduled departure time.
  • Check-in Deadline: Drop your bags and check in before counters close strictly 1 hour before your flight.

Please be notified that for flights departing from Washington, Ethiopian Airlines has temporarily limited excess baggage to a maximum of 2 per passenger making the total number of accepted checked baggage 4 per passenger. The additional 2 excess bags will be accepted on standby and may not be shipped on the same flight.

VISA for passengers transiting through ICN
Kindly note that since our flight will have a technical landing in Seoul, passengers with the nationalities Sudan, Syria, Egypt, Yeman are required to hold a transit VISA for South Korea.

Please be informed that if your flight has a stopover at Incheon Airport (ICN), based on the local requirement you are required to disembark, go through transit security screening, and then re-board the aircraft.

Travel Advisory

1. All travelers are required to submit thier SG Arrival Card before arriving in Singapore, except:

  • Those transiting/transferring through Singapore without seeking immigration clearance

  • Residents travelling through the land checkpoints.

Please note that the SG Arrival Card is not a visa. You may refer to the requirements for entering Singapore for more information.

2. All passengers with travel history to countries with risk of yellow fever in the 6 days prior to arrival in Singapore are required to have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. The Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate will only be considered valid if issued 10 days prior to arrival into Singapore.

Please note that airport check-in time for your flight on ET928 will be from 15:00 to 18:00 local time.

If travel is on a short-term visa, you will need to have a return ticket preferably on Ethiopia Airlines. If the return ticket is on other airlines, an indemnity will have to be submitted.
Long-term visas under process - Passengers need to carry the payment receipt and Declaration. Passengers will also need to have a single-entry visa to enter South Africa. If NOT OK TO BOARD pops up during the check-in system, passengers must contact DHA-South Africa to have the status changed and obtain a "Waiver of Unfavor" letter from DHA- South Africa.

Ethiopian officers do not call you for payment or ask you to transfer money to any specific bank account . Ethiopian has city offices and airport offices in four cities in Nigeria, namely Kano, Enugu, Abuja and Lagos; you may visit our offices for any further information.

Travel Advisory

  • Passport or national identity cards are required for all passengers traveling between Vienna and Copenhagen, along with residence permit or citizenship in one of the Schengen countries. Driving license or other ID cards are not considered as travel documents.

  • Passengers traveling between Vienna and Copenhagen who require entry visa to Schengen countries must have a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa. Passengers who already used a single-entry Schengen visa to enter Vienna or another Schengen country cannot travel on Ethiopian Airlines flight between Vienna and Copenhagen as their single-entry Schengen visa is already used.

This fare is payable in Ethiopian Birr only if you are an Ethiopian citizen, or you have a residence permit in Ethiopia.

Note:

  • It is mandatory to present all the necessary documents upon ticketing (if payment is made at city or airport ticket offices) and at the time of check-in to the airline on demand. Failure to present the required documents may result in the denial of the passenger's flight.
  • If you do not hold any of these documents, your ticket must be paid with credit/debit card on the Website/ Mobile App OR pay in cash in USD, GBP, or EUR currencies at ticket offices.
