Extra Baggage

Carry on baggage

  1. Each passenger may carry without additional charge, the following carry-on items the weight of which shall not exceed 5kg.The carry-on items are permitted for use during the flight and when retained in the passengers’ custody as listed here below
    • A lady handbag, pocket book or purse, which is appropriate to normal traveling dress and is not being used as a container for the transportation of articles, which would otherwise be regarded as baggage.
    • Laptop
    • An overcoat, wrap or blanket.
    • A small camera and/or a pair of binoculars.
    • A reasonable amount of reading material for the flight.
    • Infant’s food for consumption in flight.
    • Infant’s carrying basket.
    • Duty free items
  2. On top of the additional 5kg already permitted, passengers may carry a fully collapsible wheel chair and/or a pair of crutches, and /or braces or other prosthetic device for the passenger use provided that the passenger is dependent upon them.
    Note: Some items might be checked or carried in the passenger cabin, subject to the availability of space or cargo compartment of the aircraft. Items, which may cause injury, will not be allowed as carry-on baggage.
  3. Musical instruments shall be permitted to be carried in cabin as carry-on baggage so long as the dimension of the instrument (inside or outside of its package) do not exceed the carry-on dimension standard set by the airline. That is to say 23 x 40 x 55 (cm).
  4. Passengers shall be notified of this information at every customer contact point starting from reservations, ticket offices and at check-in counters. Team Leaders and managers have the responsibility to ensure the communication is made at every level. In addition to personal communication, the information will be availed in any of the following ways:-
    On the tickets or printed itinerary
    • Ticket office or check in counter signs, poster, and display
    • Announcements
    • Brochures
    • Ethiopian website
  5. The information to communicate to the passengers shall include-
    • Items which can be carried free of charge
    • No of piece of carry-on baggage
    • All baggage shall be presented at the time of check in.
    • Size and weight
    • Baggage, which exceeds the limit, shall not be accepted as carry-on baggage
    • Items which are excluded in the hand baggage
    • Items, which must be carried in the carry-on baggage like Valuable, medicine, etc…
  6. The following entitlement applies per class of service.

    Note: Star Alliance Gold passengers traveling in First/Business class are entitled to at least 2 pieces of carry-on luggage weighing 7kg each with the dimension of each pieces 23 x 40 x 55 (cm).

Carry on baggage should be suitable for placement in the over-head rack or under the passenger’s seat. The sum of the three dimensions (L+W+H) shall not exceed (23 x 40 x 55 cm)

1. What is my allowance for checked baggage?

For piece system

Economy: up to 2 pieces, each with a maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lbs.) and maximum sum of dimension equal to 158 cm (62 in.) Cloud Nine: up to 2 pieces, each with a maximum weight of 32 kg (70 lbs.) or 3 pieces 23 kg each and a maximum sum of dimension equal to 158 cm (62 in.)

For weight system

Economy: up to 40KG From/To DOH/MCT/KWI/BAH, Up to 46KG From KWI to KRT and for domestic flight 20KG.Cloud Nine/Business class: Always Piece system applies with 3 PC-23KG except for domestic flights where 30KG applies


2. What are the baggage allowances for flights with other airlines?

For code share flights, the free baggage allowance will be as agreed with the code share partners. The information will be communicated by Commercial Cooperation & Star Alliance Coordination section. However for Star Alliance member carriers, the allowance shall be 40,30,20kgs for First, Business and Economy class respectively.
The maximum sum of the three dimensions (length + width + height) of each bag shall not exceed 158 cm (62 inches)

3. What is the weight and piece concept?

In weight system, the free baggage allowance shall be as provided by Ethiopian per class of service used. For code share flights, the free baggage allowance will be as agreed with the code share partners. However, for Star Alliance member carriers, the allowance shall be 40,30,20kgs for First, Business and Economy class respectively. 4. What is my allowance for cabin baggage?

For business class two (2) pieces each weighing 7 kg is acceptable free of charge.
For economy class one (1) piece with a maximum weight of 7 kg is acceptable free of charge. In both cases the carry on baggage should be suitable for placement in the over-head rack or under the passenger’s seat. The three dimensions (L x W x H) shall not exceed (23 x 40 x 55 cm).

5. How will my baggage allowance be calculated?

Your baggage allowance may be calculated by piece or weight depending on the route you are planning to travel.
