Excess Baggage Charges

The applicable charge for baggage weight in excess of the free baggage allowance varies for each sector except for travel to/from the USA/Canada where the piece system shall apply.

Excess Luggage Rules for Sporting Equipment

  1. These excess baggage rates are only applicable on ET operated flights.
  2. These excess baggage rates shall be applicable per PORTION  and  ADD should be a transfer point   (e.g. for the one-way itinerary  London-Addis Ababa-Zanzibar, the Excess baggage charge shall be assessed for London-Zanzibar), but  if Addis Ababa is a stopover  then charge shall be accessed per sector   as  London-Addis Ababa plus Addis Ababa-Zanzibar
  3. The excess baggage charge for sporting equipment can be collected in the local currency of the departure station.
  4. Provided that the below three criteria are fulfilled, any sporting equipment shall be transported for free on Ethiopian flights.
    1. The passenger is carrying only 1 checked-in baggage, making the sporting equipment the 2nd PC.
    2. The weight of the sporting equipment is less than or equal to 23 Kgs even if it is the 2nd PC.
    3. The dimension of the sporting equipment is less than or equal to 158cms or 62 inches.
  1. Any equipment in excess of the applicable weight and dimension (i.e. 23kgs & 158cms/62 inches respectively) shall be transported as excess baggage based on the established excess baggage rates provided that the dimension fit into the aircraft's belly.   Payment is non-refundable/non-re routable and NON-ENDORSABLE
  2. Ethiopian shall not carry Jet Ski
  3. All other rules and regulations concerning sporting equipment shall be governed by Ethiopian baggage handling and excess baggage handling policies and procedures.

Notice for travelers from Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires

Surf board with total dimension of less than or equal to 300cm (118 Inches) can be taken as part of the free checked-in baggage only on ET operated flights.

This rule is applicable only on wide body aircrafts, and shall not be applicable on B737 aircrafts due to dimension restriction.

Any sporting equipment with total dimensions exceeding 300cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight.

  • Miscellaneous Charges Order (MCO)
  • Credit Cards
  • Government Excess Baggage Authorization (GEBA) - if you are traveling under the auspices of any Government you can use GEBA to pay for excess baggage.
