Ethiopian Airlines and the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) have signed an agreement to make the Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy an authorized IATA training center. This will give the Academy the opportunity to host standardized IATA aviation courses to regional aviation communities. With its strategic vision to becoming world class center of excellence in aviation training, the Academy is committed to serve as a forum for knowledge and skill sharing for the regional civil aviation communities. This is a good indication of its commitment to the regional aviation industry.

The Academy will host the following commercial and instructional techniques courses to all interested parties as advertised on the IATA as well as Ethiopian Airlines’ web site.

  1. Air Transport Management
  2. Safety Management Systems (SMS) for Airlines
  3. Airline Operation Document System and Quality
  4. Threat & Error Management - CRM
  5. Passenger Proration
  6. Instructional Techniques

Ethiopian Airlines established its own training center in 1957. Since then various training units have been established under the different functional divisions. Recently, the schools have been consolidated under the newly restructured Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy.

During the last five decades, the different training schools have been supplying the Airline and third party clients with aviation professionals of diverse qualifications. The courses are designed to meet both the basic and recurrent training needs of the airline industry.

The Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy comprises of the following Departments:

  • Ethiopian Basic Pilot Training Center has trained 822 pilots among whom 299 (36%) are trained for third parties from 43 countries.
  • The technical recurrent training section provides initial, recurrent, familiarization and upgrade training for aircraft maintenance personnel to help them keep abreast with the fast pacing aviation technology and develop required skills. The basic training has trained until today 2348 technicians among which 771 (33%) are foreigners from 48 African and Middle Eastern countries.
  • The Commercial Operations Training School develops personnel for Marketing and Sales, Passenger and Cargo Services as well as for Finance. Since its establishment in 1981, the School has trained and graduated over 1300 marketing and finance staff.
  • The Cabin Crew Training School has trained and graduated over 2500 Cabin Crew members that have joined the workforce over the years. This group includes the recently trained and graduated Chinese and the Togolese Cabin Crews who will serve on specific routes to meet ET’s customer needs.
  • The Human Resource Training Department which develops and updates the managerial competency of management personnel to meet current and future business need of the Airline.

The Airlines’ capability to train its critical human resources has significantly contributed to the sustainability, safety and business growth of the Airline.
