Ethiopian Airlines and Gulf Air have entered into a strategic code-sharing agreement opening up routes and services to each other in their respective networks and providing customers with seamless connections between their networks effective July 1, 2007.
Mr. Busera Awel, Vice President Commercial of Ethiopian Airlines says, “The code share agreement with Gulf Air comes at a period when Ethiopian Airlines is relentlessly pursuing a fast growth strategy in all areas of its activities. The airline already has different cooperation agreements with other African and European carriers, even though this is the first with a Gulf Region carrier. The partnership with Gulf Air will allow our customers to have access to additional points in the Middle East and Asian points from Bahrain and at the same time enable us to strengthen our presence in the region.”
The agreement, on its the first phase, will cover the route between Addis Ababa and Bahrain which will open Gulf Air’s vast Middle East and Asia network for seamless connections to Ethiopian’s 29 online stations in Africa.
Referring to the agreement, Mr. Hashim Mahmood, Executive Vice President Network Gulf Air says ”We have entered a new era of operational efficiency with the implementation of our new refined network and the code share agreement with Ethiopian Airlines is a key strategy as we are constantly looking at ways to strengthen our reach, and building alliances (code sharing) with other airlines.”
Ethiopian Airlines’ strong presence in Africa coupled with Gulf Air’s unrivalled network in the Middle East and Asia will allow both carriers to cover wider market outreach.
