Ethiopian Airlines Carry-On Baggage Allowance: What You Need to Know

  1. Free Carry-On Items (Weight Limit: 7kg): 

      In addition to the carryon luggage allowance provided herein, each passenger may carry without additional charge, the following carryon items the weight of which shall not exceed 5kg. The carryon items are permitted for use during the flight and when retained in the passengers’ custody as listed here below.

    .  A lady handbag, pocketbook, or purse, which is appropriate to normal traveling dress and is not being used as a container for the transportation of articles, which would otherwise be regarded as baggage.

    . Laptop

    . An overcoat wraps or blanket.

    . A small camera and/or a pair of binoculars.

    . A reasonable amount of reading material for the flight.

    . Infant’s food for consumption in flight.

    . Infant’s carrying basket.

    . Duty free items

2  On top of the additional 5kg already permitted, passengers may carry a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches, and /or braces or other prosthetic device for the passenger use provided that the passenger is dependent upon them.

Note: Articles mentioned in 2 and 3 may be checked or carried in the passenger cabin, subject to the availability of space or cargo compartment of the aircraft. Items, which may cause injury, will not be allowed as carry-on baggage.

3   Additional Allowance:

 Passengers may also carry a collapsible wheelchair, crutches, braces, or prosthetic devices if dependent on them. This is in addition to the 7kg limit.

4  Film and Musical Instruments:

  • Film and musical instruments can be carried as carry-on baggage if their dimensions (inside or outside the package) do not exceed 23cm x 40cm x 55cm.

5 Communication of Carry-On Information:

  • Passengers will be informed of these regulations at various customer contact points, including reservations, ticket offices, and check-in counters.

  • Information will be provided through tickets, printed itineraries, signs, announcements, brochures, and the Ethiopian Airlines website.

  1. What are the safety concerns for cabin baggage?

Passengers are not allowed to carry the following items in their hand baggage for passengers’ safety and security reasons. To minimize inconvenience, you are advised to check in or put these items in your checked baggage instead:



Please note that these items will be retrieved at the boarding gate by the local authorities and depending on local rules and regulations, the items may not be returned to you.

  1. What are the rules and charges for travelling with animals?

Ethiopian shall accept only Dog or Cat into the cabin with limited number per compartment (2 in economy class and 1 in business class) with a box measuring dimensions not more than 55x40x20cms and does not exceed 8kgs including transport container, otherwise it should be loaded in belly.

  1. Is baggage transferred when I’m on connecting Ethiopian airlines flights?

Yes, Ethiopian receives connecting passenger’s baggage from other airlines. If luggage of connecting passenger is not submitted by the delivering carrier such connecting passenger should be informed using a slip prepared for this purpose that their luggage is not delivered to Ethiopian and hence not to expect at final destination.

  1. Can I carry firearms, weapons, and ammunition in my baggage?

Ammunition, firearms, sharp knives and/or other security-restricted items belonging to passengers shall not be carried inside cabin and/or flight deck (cockpit), and passengers must declare such items at the time of check-in. All ammunition shall be carried in the aircraft hold as checked baggage only and with approval of concerned Security Authorities.

  1. Is there a difference in carry-on allowances for different classes of service with Ethiopian Airlines?

Yes, there is a difference. Business class passengers with Ethiopian Airlines have a higher allowance, with 2 pieces of hand luggage weighing 7 kg each, compared to Economy class.

Please be notified that for flights departing from Washington, Ethiopian Airlines has temporarily limited excess baggage to a maximum of 2 per passenger making the total number of accepted checked baggage 4 per passenger. The additional 2 excess bags will be accepted on standby and may not be shipped on the same flight.

VISA for passengers transiting through ICN
Kindly note that since our flight will have a technical landing in Seoul, passengers with the nationalities Sudan, Syria, Egypt, Yeman are required to hold a transit VISA for South Korea.

Please be informed that if your flight has a stopover at Incheon Airport (ICN), based on the local requirement you are required to disembark, go through transit security screening, and then re-board the aircraft.

Travel Advisory

1. All travelers are required to submit thier SG Arrival Card before arriving in Singapore, except:

  • Those transiting/transferring through Singapore without seeking immigration clearance

  • Residents travelling through the land checkpoints.

Please note that the SG Arrival Card is not a visa. You may refer to the requirements for entering Singapore for more information.

2. All passengers with travel history to countries with risk of yellow fever in the 6 days prior to arrival in Singapore are required to have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. The Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate will only be considered valid if issued 10 days prior to arrival into Singapore.

Please note that airport check-in time for your flight on ET928 will be from 15:00 to 18:00 local time.

If travel is on a short-term visa, you will need to have a return ticket preferably on Ethiopia Airlines. If the return ticket is on other airlines, an indemnity will have to be submitted.
Long-term visas under process - Passengers need to carry the payment receipt and Declaration. Passengers will also need to have a single-entry visa to enter South Africa. If NOT OK TO BOARD pops up during the check-in system, passengers must contact DHA-South Africa to have the status changed and obtain a "Waiver of Unfavor" letter from DHA- South Africa.

Ethiopian officers do not call you for payment or ask you to transfer money to any specific bank account . Ethiopian has city offices and airport offices in four cities in Nigeria, namely Kano, Enugu, Abuja and Lagos; you may visit our offices for any further information.

Travel Advisory

  • Passport or national identity cards are required for all passengers traveling between Vienna and Copenhagen, along with residence permit or citizenship in one of the Schengen countries. Driving license or other ID cards are not considered as travel documents.

  • Passengers traveling between Vienna and Copenhagen who require entry visa to Schengen countries must have a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa. Passengers who already used a single-entry Schengen visa to enter Vienna or another Schengen country cannot travel on Ethiopian Airlines flight between Vienna and Copenhagen as their single-entry Schengen visa is already used.
