City Guide, Kano

Kano State is a state located in North-Western Nigeria. Created on May 27, 1967 from part of the Northern Region, Kano state borders Katsina State to the north-west, Jigawa State to the north-east, and Bauchi and Kaduna states to the south.

Kano is the major industrial center of N Nigeria; peanut flour and oil, cotton textiles, steel furniture, processed meat, concrete blocks, shoes, and soap are the chief manufactures. The city has long been known for its leatherwork; its tanned goatskins were sent (from about 15th cent.) to N Africa and were known in Europe as Morocco leather.

Tourist Attractions

Dyed cloth is a popular find for tourists. The dye pits of Kano are over 500 years old and are privately owned. Indigo dyes were once used to make garments for Nigerian royalty and some say they can also be used to treat illness. Make sure you get a tour of the dye pits and explore all the different colors and patterns.

City wall is an ancient city wall with a 14km radius earth structure and it has other associated sites that are made up of Dala Hills, Kurmi Market and Emir's Palace. The wall was completed in 14th Century to provide security to the growing population of the old Kano city in the wake of any external aggression

Culture and entertainments

Emir's Palace is the primary one among places you should stop by in Kano. This palace is one of the finest examples of the Hausa architecture. Enugu rose as an important center for Highlife music in Nigeria in the 1950s. The Igbo dominated version of the genre grew out of earlier "Igbo blues" or "palm wine music" and further spread in popularity to the Southern Cameroons where Enugu had considerable influence in arts and culture in towns such as Limbe.

The locals of the city, the Hausa, speak their own Hausa language that carries elements of Arabic and belongs to the Chadic languages of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Although there are cities like Kano, towns, and small villages among settlements that the Hausa built, rural ones make up the majority of the population.

Food and Drink

Dishes of the traditional Hausa cuisine are widely prepared today as well. Among them, dishes that are locally called tuwo da miya, kunun tsami, kosai, and kwadon ganye can be listed. In the marketplaces regularly set up in the sides of almost all streets; agricultural food products in addition to quite various handcrafted items are among options for shopping.

Shopping

Kurmi is a marketplace with a historical aspect. Not only local textiles, but also those that come from various parts of the world are available for sale here. The economy of Kona depends on various agricultural products like millet and corn that are planted alternately .Products that are made with handcrafts such as straw plaiting, leather embroidery, weaving and silver craftsmanship are also available for sale in traditional markets.
