12. Meskel - The Colorful Festival
Ethiopian Christians annually celebrate a festival every
September to commemorate the finding of the true cross on
which Jesus Christ was crucified. This big and long-standing
festival known by localities as ‘Meskel’ to say ‘cross’ will
take place on 28th of September this year.
Meskel is a colorful occasion that focuses on ‘Demera’
an Amharic version of ‘bonfire’ having an image of yellow
Meskel daisies tied on top of it. The flowering of the
crossshaped daisies marks the end of the 3-month long rainy
season and the return of the sun. Priests in full regalia
gather behind the bonfire to rehearse chanting and blessing.
The cross that was said to be built from a tree grown on
top of Adam Grave had lost for three centuries until
Constantine's mother; Helena made a journey to visit the
sacred land of Jerusalem and intended to search for the
where abouts of this cross .
According to the Legend, having prayed for about seven days
in Jerusalem, an Angel had told Helena miraculously to put
incense on top of a Bonfire and follow the smoke direction
to locate the place where it had been buried. Abided by the
word of the Angel, she ordered excavation on September27 at
the end of the 4th century .Seven months later, she found
the true cross.
The Queen built a church for its
preservation at a place called Golgotha whose construction
completed after a year on the same date she ordered the
excavations .Finally she officially announced September 27
to commemorate the finding of the true cross every year as a
holiday .
Although the biggest colorful celebration
takes place in Addis Ababa at Meskel square, this festival
is celebrated through out the country in every church yard
in the same
colorful tradition. This festival is now 1600 years old.
The
Legend also has it that Ethiopia is the final resting place for
the fragment of the true cross. Due to the contention of the then super
powers such as the Roman’s, Babylon’s to own the true cross,
religious leaders had intervened to stop the conflict and
divided the cross in to four pieces to share its healing power
to the world. According to the descended down legend, African’s
had the right hand side of the fragment of this true cross as
its share which most had consensuses to place it at Alexandria,
Egypt.
However, after the expansion of Islam in
Egypt during the 14th century, it is said that this fragment
brought to Ethiopia from Egypt on the request of the then
Ethiopian king -King David and during the 15th century his
successor King Zara Jacob transferred it to the Present
final resting place called Gishen Debre Kerbe
‘EgziabhereAbe’ church (a church dedicated to almighty God)
situated in wollo region.
Orthodox Christians from all walk of life
travel to this region every year in October first or second
to celebrate the coming of the true cross as it has been
done for the past 550 years. Clergymen adorn the celebration
by carrying the replica of Ark of the Covenant and a replica
of fragment of the cross brought to Ethiopia.
Join Ethiopians in the 2nd Millennium
Colorful ‘Meskel’ festival, celebrated every year on Septmber 27.
Festival day for the commemoration of the
coming of the true cross at Gishen Debere Kerbe in Wello
region is celebrated every year on October 2.
