I. Free Baggage Allowance

The standard free baggage allowance when flying Ethiopian is as follows. Contact the nearest Ethiopian ticket office for special offers.

A. Weight System

1. Our baggage allowance varies from one destination to the other so please contact the local Ethiopianairlines office for more information

2. An infant not occupying a seat is allowed 10kgs of free baggage and one fully collapsible stroller/push chair.

3. For baggage above the free baggage allowance, excess weight charges at the rate of 1.5% of the one-way economy class fare per kilogram will apply.

4. The free baggage allowance under the weight system applies to all areas except to/from the USA/CANADA.

B. Piece System (applies only for travel across Atlantic)

The free baggage allowance under the piece system applies if you are traveling to/from USA/CANADA.

1. Free baggage allowance is as follows:

2. The total of the 3 dimensions of each bag (piece) shall not exceed 158cm (62 inches).

3. The maximum weight of any bag (piece) of the free baggage allowance shall be 23kg (50 lb).

4. Infants not occupying seats are allowed one checked bag (piece) plus one fully collapsible child’s stroller. The sum of the 3 dimensions of the bag shall not exceed 45 inches (115cm).

5. Each excess baggage or piece above the free baggage allowance on the piece system shall be charged 135 United States dollars per piece to ET destinations in the USA/CANADA.

6. Each excess baggage or piece above the free baggage allowance on the piece system shall be charged per the table below for all travels from Washington to East & Central Africa.

II. Baggage Check-In

A. General

1. You are kindly requested to remove all old strap tags from previous trips prior to check-in for a new flight.

2. Baggage will be accepted for check-in, only if it properly contains and prevents damage to the contents. Light cardboard boxes, paper bags and similar non-durable materials are not acceptable.

3. Items, which may cause damage to other baggage, will not be accepted.

4. Extremely bulky and oversized articles shall be forwarded by airfreight.

5.All baggage must be accompanied by the passenger. No exceptions.

B. Excess Baggage Charges

1. Baggage weight in excess of the free baggage allowance will be charged per kilogram at the rate of 1.5% of the one-way economy class fare except for travel to/from the USA/Canada where the piece system shall apply.

2. One set of skiing equipment (one pair of skis, one pair of ski poles and/or one pair of boots) will be charged at the applicable rate for three (3) kilograms of excess baggage. If you carry more than one set, the normal excess baggage charge shall apply for the extra weight.

3. One set of golfing equipment (one golf bag and one pair of golf shoes) will be charged at the applicable rate for six (6) kilograms of excess baggage. If weight of golfing equipment exceeds 15 kg the normal excess charge shall apply.

4. Excess baggage charges must be assessed and paid for before boarding.

5. Payment methods

a. Cash

b. Invoice when the passenger or his Company is on Ethiopian Credit List

c. Miscellaneous Charges Order (MCO)

d. Credit Cards

e. Government Excess Baggage Authorization (GEBA) - if you are traveling under the auspices of any Government you can use GEBA to pay for excess baggage.

C. Baggage Excess Value Charge

1. If you want to declare the value of checked baggage, the valuation charge shall be assessed at 0.50 United States Dollars for each 100, - United States Dollars or portion thereof.

2. Acceptance of value declared baggage for carriage shall be limited to Ethiopian destinations only.

III. Baggage Shipped as Cargo (Unaccompanied Baggage)

Unaccompanied baggage including only personal wearing apparel and your personal articles may be accepted as cargo, for a trip you hold a ticket for; provided the baggage is delivered no later than the date of your departure.

IV. Cabin Carry-On Luggage

1. One piece of carry-on baggage is acceptable free of charge provided it is suitable for placing in the over-head rack or under your seat. The sum of the three dimensions (L+W+H) shall not exceed 115 cm and/or 45 inches and weight must not exceed 7kgs (15 lb).

2. In addition, you may also carry free of charge, items of personal effects for use in flight, as listed below:

  1. A handbag, pocket book or purse.
  2. A small camera and/or a pair of binoculars.
  3. A reasonable amount of reading material for the flight.
  4. Infant’s food for consumption in-flight.
  5. Infant’s carrying basket.
  6. A fully collapsible cabin wheel chair and/or a pair of crutches, and /or braces or other prosthetic device for the passengers use, provided that the passenger is dependent upon them.
  7. One Lap top without accessories and attachments.

V. Delayed and Lost Baggage

Delayed and lost baggage should be reported to Ethiopian Office at the airport immediately after the arrival of your flight and before leaving the baggage claim area to Ethiopian Airlines Representative to secure a file reference number. For a claim after leaving the baggage claiming area requires proof of evidence that confirms the loss or damage is resulted because of the Carrier failure. You can follow your claim statuses with local Ethiopian offices on an e-mail xxxapt@ethiopianairlines.com where ‘xxx’ stands for three letter IATA code of your destination airport where Ethiopian Airlines operate.
