This year (2010) was proclaimed the Year of Peace and Security in Africa on 31 August 2009 by the African Union Assembly. It is a catalytic moment for the continent to take stock of and celebrate its achievements in peace-building to date, as well as to review current efforts with a view to strengthening them and where appropriate launching new initiatives for peace and security.
Through the Year of Peace and Security, Africa seeks to strengthen partnerships with the rest of the international community, as well as businesses and civil society in support of Africa’s efforts. A number of events have been planned as part of the implementation of the Year of Peace and Security programme, including a day of non-violence and intensified humanitarian assistance; one minute of silence and football games for peace – among other activities – on the International Day of Peace (Peace Day) 21 September 2010.
